Dog Beach Owner’s Guide to Proper Coat Brushing
Keep your pup cool, comfortable, and looking their best in the Florida sunshine with these professional grooming secrets.
Living here in beautiful St. Petersburg means our dogs live the good life. From downtown dog parks to sandy frolics at Fort De Soto’s dog beach, our pups stay active and cool. But that glorious Florida lifestyle brings a unique challenge for dog owners: coat maintenance.
We see it all the time at the shop. A pet parent brings in their water loving pup convinced they are brushing regularly, only to find out their dog has matting close to the skin.
The challenge is usually a misunderstanding of technique.
Brushing isn’t just about making your dog look fluffy. In our hot St. Pete climate, a well-brushed coat is essential for air circulation to keep your dog cool and prevent skin irritations. Today, we’re sharing the friendly, professional secrets to brushing your dog the right way.
The Right Tools for the Job
You wouldn’t use a garden rake to comb your hair, right? Using the wrong brush on your dog can be ineffective or even painful. While different breeds need specific tools, these are the essentials for most St. Pete pups:
- The Slicker Brush: The workhorse for many breeds (especially Doodles, Goldens, and double coats). It has fine wire pins that separate the hair from skin to tip.
- The Fine Tooth Metal Comb: You truth-teller. This is used after brushing to check your work.

Tip: If you aren’t sure which brush is perfect for your dog’s specific coat type we’re happy to make a recommendation.
The Secret Sauce: “Line Brushing”
This is the number one technique that separates professional groomers from average pet owners.
Many owners just brush the top layer of fur. The dog looks smooth on the surface, but underneath, near the skin, a literal blanket of painful mats is forming.
Line brushing ensures you are brushing from the skin out.
Here is how to do it in 4 easy steps:
- Start Low: Have your dog stand or lay on their side. Start near the bottom of a leg or the lower ribcage.
- Lift and Part: With one hand, lift a section of fur upward against the grain, creating a horizontal part (a “line”) where you can see the skin.
- Brush Down: With your brush hand, gently brush the fur below the part in small, downward strokes, pulling from the skin out to the tips.
- Move Up: Once that small section is smooth, drop a tiny bit of the hair you are holding up, creating a new “line” slightly higher, and repeat the process.
Work your way up the leg, up the body, and across the chest, inch by inch. It takes time, but it’s the only way to prevent deep mats.
The Final Exam: The Comb Check
You think you’re done? Not quite!
Take your metal greyhound comb and gently run it through the areas you just brushed, going all the way to the skin.
- Did the comb glide through like butter? Congratulations! You did an amazing job.
- Did the comb get stuck? Do not force it. That snag is a forming mat. Go back to that spot with your slicker brush and use the line brushing technique to gently work it out.
St. Petersburg Specifics: Sand and Humidity
Our local environment plays a role here.
When your dog plays at the beach, sand gets embedded deep in their coat. If you bathe them without fully brushing that sand out first, the water combined with sand acts like cement, creating incredibly tight mats that are almost impossible to brush out later.
Furthermore, Florida humidity causes hair to curl and frizz tighter, accelerating matting.
The Golden Rule: Never bathe a matted dog. Water tightens mats. Always brush completely before the bath.
When to Call the Pros
Proper brushing is a workout, and it requires patience. We know that life in St. Pete is busy!
If you find that line brushing is too difficult, or if your dog already has tight mats behind their ears or under their “armpits,” please don’t try to cut them out with scissors (this is a common way dogs get accidentally nicked).
Bring them to us. Sometimes, the kindest thing for a severely matted dog is a professional “reset” haircut to start fresh. We can get their coat healthy again and show you exactly how to maintain it between visits so you can get back to enjoying the sunshine together.
